Zambia’s President, Levy Patrick Mwanawasa has died, 15 days before he could turn 60 years-old.
President Mwanawasa died in a French Military Hospital at 10:30 hours Zambian time at Percy Military Hospital on Tuesday.
Vice President, Rupiah Banda confirmed the death of the President.
Dr. Mwanawasa was admitted to the French Hospital since last month.
Mr. Banda has since announced a seven-day national mourning with effect from Tuesday.
He has since asked to the nation to remain calm and mourn Dr. Mwanawasa with self-respect.
Dr. Mwanawasa suffered a stroke on 29th June in Egypt where he had gone to attend the African Union Summit of Heads of State and Government.
He was earlier admitted to Shiekh El- Sharma hospital before he was taken to Percy Military Hospital in France for specialist treatment.
Dr. Mwanawasa was married to Maureen, who is also a lawyer by profession, and he has left behind six children.
Several Zambians described the death of Dr. Mwanawasa as a great loss.
