Kachasu Drum

BREWING BEER TO RAISE MONEY FOR SCHOOL

A fourteen year old boy of Lusaka’s George Compound has narrated to Z-kids news how he has been forced to brew a beer called Kachasu in order to raise money for school and for his family

Charles Mwamba who is in grade 7 at Kitizo Basic school brews Kachasu a traditional Zambian beer that is drunk in many rural parts of Zambia and compounds.

The beer is made from maize meal porridge, developing maize seeds and sugar.

“My family and I have been forced to make the beer to raise money to keep me and my brothers and sisters in school,” he said.

Charles says although he knows how to make the beer, he does not drink it.

He is however worried because the area where the beer is made is dirty and there is a risk of disease outbreak.

Charles like many children in Zambia has been forced to do this kind of work because there is no other means of raising money for the family and for school.
